asexual reproduction Flashcards
binary fission
a type of asexual reproduction where one organism divides into two identical organisms
asexual reproduction
producing offspring without the fusion
of gametes
stages of binary fission
Dna Replication - the circular chromosome uncoils and replicates
Cell elongation - the duplicated chromosome and plasmids migrate to opposite ends
Cytokinesis - a septum, new cell wall and membrane, form down the middle resulting in the creation of two new daughter cells.
budding
a type of asexual reproduction where a group of cells form a bud and break away from the original organism to form a clone
vegetative propagation
a type of asexual reproduction where a plant grows from fragments, such as stem or root cuttings, of its parents
advantages of asexual reproduction
- populations grow faster
- offspring are identical clones
- does not need a mate
disadvantage of asexual reproduction
low genetic diversity
