Aseptic non-touch techniques Flashcards
• Differentiate between Standard and Surgical Aseptic Non Touch Technique (ANTT). • Explain the concepts ‘key parts’ and key sites’. • Discuss principles and practices of Standard and Surgical Aseptic Non Touch Technique (ANTT).
what is clean technique?
- Visibly free from marks and stains
- is the removal of visible contamination or debris
What is Aseptic technique?
- prevent infection by blocking the introduction of pathogenic microorganisms through hands, surfaces, or equipment.
- To avoid contamination, must be used according to manufacturer’s instructions.
- two types: Standard and Surgical aseptic technique
What is Sterile technique?
- Complete absence of microorganisms (e.g. surgical)
- involves using sterile equipment and PPE
Discuss the 2 types of Aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT)
Standard
* less than 20 minutes procedure
* Few & Small Key
Parts and Key Sites
* Simple Wound, IMI, IV
Therapy
Surgical
* > 20 minutes procedure
* Large / Open Key Sites or Multiple Key Parts* Complex Procedures/ Wounds, Surgery
What are key parts and key sites?
Key parts:
- Breaches in skin integrity which could be a portal of entry for microorganisms to colonise the
patient. e.g. wounds, IMI or IV sites.
Key Sites:
parts of the equipment which come in contact with procedural equipment or the patient. e.g. needles, forceps, sterile gauze to clean a wound.
What is the Hand Hygiene for different ANTT procedures:
Aseptic
High risk aseptic
Surgical procedure
Aseptic Procedures: Alcohol Based hand rub (30-60 secs)
- Antiseptic handwash and running water (60 sec)
High risk aseptic procedures
- Antiseptic hand wash and water (2 mins)
Surgical Procedure
- -Surgical hand scrub and running water (5 mins prior to first procedure and 3 mins prior to other procedures )
Terms of glove use
- Non sterile gloves should be used when removing any dressings; risk of body fluid exposure
- Hand hygiene performed when donning and doffing of gloves
- Non sterile gloves is not required within Standard ANTT as once the dressing is removed, will be using key parts of the tips of the forceps to cleanse and dress the wound
Principles and practices of ANTT
- Use only sterile equipment.
- A sterile field/object becomes contaminated when touched
by unsterile equipment. - Take care when opening the dressing pack.
- The edges of the aseptic field are considered contaminated.
- Items held below the waist level are considered
contaminated. - Clean/gloved hands should be kept in front with the hands
as close together as possible. - Never turn your back on the aseptic field or leave the tray
unattended.
principles and practices of ANTT contin-
- Use the field forceps to transfer ‘key parts’
from the general aseptic field. - Use the working forceps when working at the
‘key site’ (wound). - Clean the wound from clean to dirty.
- Never retrace or go back.
