Aseptic Non-touch Technique Flashcards
What is asepsis in a clinical environment defined as?
Free from pathogenic organisms in sufficient numbers to cause infection
What are the key sites outlined in the key-part key-site protection?
Open wound
Surgical injections
puncture site
Insertion site
What are the key parts outlined in the key-part key-site protection?
Critical parts of procedure equipment that come into contact with active key parts connected to the patient, any liquid infusions or key sites.
For example: The tip of a syringe, needles, the wound side of addressing, intravenous ports or catheters
When are standard ANTT’s used?
Used for technically uncomplicated invasive procedures that involve minimal key parts and small key sites.
Short in duration (approx under 20 mins)
Give examples of ANTT’s
1) Cannulation
2) Reconstituting and administering certain medication
3) Venepuncture
When are surgical ANTT’s used?
Used for technically complicated invasive procedures that involve large or numerous key parts or key sites, significantly invasive or will take longer than 20 minutes to complete
Give examples of surgical ANTT
- surgical wound dressing
- any procedure involving incisions through skin
- placement of central venous line
For the ANTT risk assessment what do you have to consider the risks posed by?
The procedure environment, procedure invasiveness, the number and size of key parts and sides, operator competency, procedure duration
What do you do to decide between standard and surgical ANTT?
Consider the risks as outlined in the a NTT risk assessment and then asked to maintain the sepsis of key parts and key sites does the main aseptic field require critical management?
If no then use standard ANTT
If yes then use surgical ANTT
What are the components required for a successful standard ANTT?
- General aseptic field
- Micro critical aseptic fields
- non-touch technique
- hand cleansing
- infective precautions
What are the components required for a successful surgical ANTT?
- critical aseptic field
- critical aseptic field management
- surgical hand scrub
- MCAFs and NTT desirable
- Infectjve precautions
When should you use sterilised gloves?
Surgical ANTT: always
Standard ANTT: (if key parts and key sites don’t touch) non-steralised gloves
Standard ANTT: (if key parts and key sites do touch) sterilised gloves
