asepsis Flashcards
medical asepsis
clean technique, limits spread of microorganism maintaining a clean environment; used when bed making and feeding patient
surgical asepsis
sterile technique, ELIMINATES ALL MICROORGANISMS and their spores; used during a surgical procedure, catheter insertion
7 principles of surgical asepsis
- sterile object remains sterile ONLY when touched by another sterile object
- ONLY sterile objects may be places on sterile field
- A sterile object or field out of the range of vision or an object held below a person’s waist is contaminated
- A sterile object or field becomes contaminated by prolonged exposure to air
- When a sterile surface comes in contact with a wet, contaminated surface, the sterile object or field becomes contaminated
- fluid flows in direction of gravity
- edges of sterile field are contaminated
sterile object remains sterile ONLY when touched by another sterile object
a sterile glove touching sterile field is sterile
ONLY sterile objects may be places on sterile field
items must be sterilized, clean, and dry. if package is torn, punctured, or wet its considered contaminated
A sterile object or field out of the range of vision or an object held below a person’s waist is contaminated
anything below the waist or if you have your back towards sterile field its now contaminated
a sterile object being out for long periods of time gets contaminated
leaving because you are calling for something else now makes the sterile field contaminated because you not only turned your back to it but left it out in the open
When sterile surface becomes wet it is not considered contaminated
the package becoming wet is now contaminated and must throw away
Fluid flows in the direction of gravity
keeping arms above elbows and in front of face
edges of sterile field are contaminated
you can touch the 1 inch border with your non-sterile hand
