1967 It is the only regional association in Asia that provides a political forum where Asian countries and major powers can discuss political and security concerns.

What are the objectives of ASEAN?
- To promote economic development and through that social progress and cultural development
- To promote regional peace and security in accordance with the rule of law and the principles of the UN Charter
Why was ASEAN established?

What is the ASEAN community?
The three pillars of the ASEAN community were established in 2003. They are the
- Socio-Cultural Community
- Economic Community
(objectives
- create a common market and production base
- aid economic and social development
- improve the existing Dispute Settlement Mechanism for
resolving economic disputes)
- Security Community
(Purpose was to ensure that territorial disputes should not escalate into armed confrontation)

By this time, many agreements on peace, cooperation, respect for national differences and sovereign rights, neutrality, non-interference were signed.
When was the ASEAN regional forum formed?
1994 - Carries out foreign and security policy
What is ASEAN’s economic strength/power?
Even though the economies of ASEAN are smaller than those of the U.S, the E.U and Japan, they are faster growing.
This has led to it having considerable economic influence in the region and beyond.
It created a free trade area in 1992 for investment, labour and services.
It’s relevance as an important trade and investment partner has resulted in FTAs with U.S, China, Australia, South Korea, and Japan. India has FTAs with two ASEAN countries - Singapore and Thailand and is trying to get one with ASEAN itself
What is the ASEAN way?
Unlike the EU there is little desire for supranational institutions and structures. It has been celebrated for the ASEAN way - informal, personal, non-confrontationist, cooperative, with consensus and consultation
