Early intervention can improve a child’s development
- from birth to 3 years esp
- speech therapy for language delays
- b/h and communication approaches
- social skills training,
- occupational therapy
- sensory integration therapy
- use of assistive technology
What are the risk factors?
all of causes of ASD are not known.
- Many different factors:
- Genetic - genes are one of risk factors that can make a X more likely to develop ASD
Ch who have a sibling with ASD - > chance
- Environmental
- Biologic
What is developmental monitoring? (PLSBM)
observations re how child grows and changes over time
- are they meeting typical dev milestones in playing, learning, speaking, behaving, moving (PLSBM)
What is developmental screening? (LMTBE)
closer look at development of child
- more formal than dev monitoring
- tools used - formal questionnaires/checklists re LMTBE - language, movement, thinking, behaviours emotions
Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)
- encourages positive b/hs
- discourages negative b/hs
- -> to improve a variety of skills
Social Skills Training
skills for interacting with others
- conversation skills
- problem solving skills
