What Ix would you do on an ascitic tap
A
Cell count e.g. WCC, lymphocytes, neutrophils. Protein for exudate, transudate Serum ascites albumin gradient. Amylase Glucose Cultures and gram staining Cytology

Ascitic tap results for spontaneous bacterial peritonitis
A
high neutrophils
looks cloudy
low glucose (bacteria consume it)
low protein in ascitic fluid (this increases risk of SBP, not due to SBP)

Causes of high protein in ascitic fluid
A
Cirrhosis, fulminant hepatic failure, budd-chiari syndrome, portal venous thrombosis, alcoholic hepatitis

A
TB peritonitis, nephrotic syndrome, bowel obstruction.

A
Pancreatitis
