Asch's variation's Flashcards
What are the three situational factors
-Group size
-Unanimity of the majority
-Difficulty of the task
What did Asch do in the group size variation?
Original study there was 7-9 confederates. Wanted to see the minimum people you needed to conform
What did Asch find out about group size?
-The minimum needed to elicit conformity was 3.
-32% conformed when there was 3 confederates.
-Further increases didn’t have a major influence on conformity levels.
What did Asch conclude about group size?
The larger the group size the more likely conformity will occur up to a point
What did Asch do in unanimity of the majority variation?
Original study all the confederates gave the wrong answer (unanimous in their decision). Got support from another confederate
What did Asch find out about unanimity of the majority
Conformity dropped from 33% to 5.5%
What did Asch conclude about unanimity of the majority?
When a group disagrees with eachother they’re less likely to conform
What did Asch do in the difficulty of task variation?
The original study the line differences were obvious so he made the lines less distinguishable so it was harder to complete
What did Asch find out about difficulty of task?
Conformity increased
What did Asch conclude about difficulty of task?
The harder the task is the more likely people are to conform as the answer is more ambigious
