Q

Summarise the process of Asch’s research.

A
  • 1 real (naive) participant was placed in a room with 6-8 confederates who had agreed their answers in advanced.
  • Naive participant; decieved/led to believe the confederates were real participants.
  • Each person then has to say out loud which line was the most like the target line; the answers were obvious.
  • Each participant completed 18 trials and the confederates gave the same incorrect answer on 12 trials; ‘critical trials’.
  • Asch wanted to see if the real participant would conform to the majority view, even when the answer was clearly correct.

10
Q

Asch interviewed his participants after the experiment to find out why they conformed.

What was the feedback?

A

Most participants said that they knew their answers were incorrect, but they went along with the group in order to fit in, OR because they thought that they would be ridiculed.

Q

What does Asch’s research confirm?

15
Q

How does the difficulty of the task affect conformity?

A
  • When the lines were made more similar in length it was harder to judge the correct answer.
  • When we are uncertain, it seems we look to others for confirmation.
  • Conformity therefore increases.

16
Q

Define what is meant by the term ‘unanimity’.

A

The extent that members of the majority agree with one another.

17
Q

How does the unanimity of confederates affect conformity?

A
  • The presence of a non-conformist affects the naive participants’ liklihood of conforming.
  • This introduced confederates who disagreed with others.
  • This led to reduced conformity as it enabled the real participant to behave more independently.
18
Q

What was the conclusion of Asch’s research?

A

Conformity tends to increase as the size of the group increases.

19
Q

What was the % of conformity with one other confederate in the room?

A

3%

20
Q

What was the % of conformity with two other confederates in the room?

A

13%

21
Q

What was the % of conformity with three other confederates in the room?

A

32%

22
Q

What was considered the optimal group size for conformity to occur?

A

4

23
Q

What are the 6 ethical guidelines that MUST be followed in order for a piece of research to be carried out?

A
  1. Informed Consent
  2. Deception
  3. Debriefing
  4. Withdrawal from the Investigation
  5. Anonymity and Confidentiality
  6. Protection from Harm
