asch Flashcards
what was asch investigating
conformity
how many participants did asch use
123 american males
what was asch’s procedure
asch used 5 confederates and 1 real participant and asked them to match up the length of a test line to three other lines. the confederates were told to answer clearly incorrectly 12 out of 18 times.
what were asch’s results
asch found that 75% of participants would confirm at least once but work interviewed after the study, they said they confirmed due to NSI or ISI
what was a strength of asch’s research
123 participants - experiment could be repeated, more reliable results
what was a weakness of asch’s research
only used male participants - may not be able to generalise to women
what are the situational factors that affect conformity in asch’s study
1) made the lines more difficult to match - increases conformity (ISI)
2) introduced another confederate who gave the right answers - decreases conformity
3) allowed the real participant to answer privately on paper whilst the others answered normally - decreases conformity
4) reduced the group of confederates from 5 to 2 - decreases conformity
