Ascending Vs Decending Flashcards
Functions of descending tract
Carry motor impulses away from brain
2 neuron pathway
Function of ascending tract
Somatic sensory impulses
3 neuron pathway (1sensory, 2&3 motor)
Towards brain
Types of ascending tracts:
- anterior & posterior spinothalamic tracts
- posterior columns
- spinocerebellar tracts
Anterior spinothalamic tracts
Relays impulses for touch, pressure, tickle , itch
Lateral (posterior) spinothalamic tracts
Relay impulses for pain and temp
Posterior columns
Proprioception- exact position of body
Light & vibration sensations
Spinocerebellar tracts
Carry impulses from proprioceprors to same side of cerebellum
Descending tracts within pyramidal pathways
Corticospinal tracts
Corticobulbar tracts
Corticospinal tracts function & start/finish
- controls fine movement of ipsilateral limbs
- starts at cerebral cortex & ends at SC
Corticobulbar function & start/finish
- carries motor functions of cranial nerves
- starts at cerebral cortex & ends at brain stem
Descending tracts of extrapyramidal tracts?
- rubrospinal
- tectospinal
- vestibulospinal
- reticulospinal
Functions of rubrospinal, tectospinal, vestibulospinal, & reticulospinal tracts:
- reg muscle tone
- maintain posture
- coordinate movement with vision
Which extrapyramidal tracts decussate?
Rubrospinal & tectospinal- yes
Vestibulospinal & reticulospinal- no
