Ascending and Descending Tracts Flashcards
Tract name ends with “spinal”
e.g. Vestibulospinal
Motor tract
e.g. Information from the vestibular apparatus to the spinal cord
Tract name begins with “spino”
Sensory
e.g. From the spinal cord to the cerebellum
Always the dorsal root ganglion
Taga-pick up ng sensation before pumasok sa spinal cord
First-order neuron
Interneuron with the cell body in the spinal cord or brainstem
Second-order neuron
-in the medulla (decussation)
That’s why when the right side of brain is damaged, feel it in the left side of the body
Transmits information from the thalamus to cerebral cortex, projection to the somatosensory tract
Third-order neuron
Type of sensation that is conveyed by the tract itself
Crude touch sensations - carried in anterior spinothalmic tract
Pain and temperature - lateral spinothalamic tract
Proprioception amd vibration - sense in the dorsal columns
Sensory modality
Know about:
Somatotopic
Medial-lateral rule
Know about:
Central cord syndrome
Dorsal Column
Fasciculus : white matter
Gracile fasciculus : lower extremity, inferior to T6
Cuneate fasciculus : upper extremity, superior to T6
Pyramidal tracts
Lateral corticospinal tract
Anterior corticospinal tract
Thalamus
Almost all sensations go here, before it gets transmitted to cerebral cortex
Descending tract
Conscious control of skeletal muscles
Corticospinal tract
Descending tract
Subconscious regulation of balance, muscle tone, eye, hand, upper limb position
Subconscious tract
3 pairs of descending tracts
Bulbar: refers to brainstem area
1 Corticobulbar tracts
Vestibulospinal : semicircular canal
Tectospinal
Reticulospinal
Rubrospinal
Subconscious motor tracts
