Ascending and Descending Flashcards
What info uses the dorsal column?
Sensory info for fine touch, proprioception and vibration
What are the two parts to the dorsal column?
Lateral = arms = fasciculus cuneatus Medial = legs = fasciculus gracilis
Describe the path of vibration from arm
Enters spinal cord and ascends at ipsilateral side in the fasciculus cuneatus part of the dorsal column.
Crosses over at the Medulla.
Synapses at the medial lemniscus.
Travels to thalamus
Travels to primary sensory cortex via internal capsule.
What does the anterolateral tract contain?
Sensory info for pain, temperature and pressure
What does the spinothalamic tract contain?
Sensory info for pain, temperature and pressure
Describe the path of pain
Pain enters spinal cord and crosses over
Travels to thalamus without stopping at medulla
Goes to primary sensory cortex via internal capsule
Name the pyramidal descending tract
Corticospinal
What tract coordinates fine movements?
Corticospinal
Describe the path of fine movements
Motor cortex to brain stem via internal capsule
Descending axons bunch together to make anterior pyramids at medulla
2/3rds of the way down medulla 80% of neurones cross to make lateral tract
The other 1/3rd continue down to make anterior tract
Name the extrapyramidal tracts
Tectospinal, Vestibulospinal, Reticulospinal
What does tectospinal tract contain?
Movements in response to sound stimulus
Only in cervical region
What does vestibulospinal contain?
Coordinates antigravity muscles in response to info from bony labyrinth in ear
What does reticulospinal contain?
Consciousness, breathing, muscle tone
