ASB + Energy Changes Flashcards
Element
A substance consisting of atoms which all have the same amount of protons (same atomic number)
Ion
An electrically charged atom or group of atoms formed by the loss or gain of electrons
Atom
The smallest unit of a chemical element
Orbitals
The region of space around the nucleus of an atom where an electron is likely to be found
Electron
A negatively charged subatomic particle
Proton
A positively charged subatomic particle
Neutron
A subatomic particle with no charge
Acid
A corrosive substance with a pH less than 7. Turns blue litmus and universal indicator red. Contains H+ ion
Base
A substance with a pH greater than 7. Turns red litmus and universal indicator blue. Contains OH- ion
Lewis Structure
A diagram that show the bonding between atoms in a molecule and the lone pairs of electrons which may also exist
State
The way in which a substance is, can be solid, liquid or gas
Molten
Melted into a liquid state
Tetrahedral
A term used to describe molecules and polyatomic ions that have one atom in the centre and four at the corners of a tetrahedron
Trigonal Planar
A term used to describe molecules and polyatomic ions that have one atom at the centre and three at the corners of a triangle
Trigonal Pyramidal
A term used to describe molecules and polyatomic ions that have one atom at the apex and three at the corners of a triangular (trigonal) base
