CALMTEA
Conduct your dealings in a sensitive manner
Accept they are telling the truth (until/unless there is evidence to prove the contrary
Listen to what they tell you, giving them the opportunity to tell their account in their words
Medical attention, establish if required
Treat them courteously
Explain the process you are following and why you need to follow it and ask certain questions
Advise them of the local counselling services available.
Timings
Acute 0 - 7 days
Non-acute 7 days and before 6 months
Historic 6 months onwards

4 Preliminary Interview - objective
Gain a better understanding of what has occurred:
• Investigative actions
• Offences disclosed
• Formal complaint has been made
Step 6 Medical forensic Examinations protocol
Acute: ASAP - within 24 hours before evidence is lost - Consult with the Medical Doctor and seek advise after briefing.
Non-acute: Always refer victim to SAATS medical care - some forensic evidence can still be captured (injury) etc
Historic: Refer to SAATS to determine whether they may benefit from a medical examination (never assume)
Step 6 Medical forensic Examinations - objective
Primary objective of examination: Victims physical, sexual and mental health and safety is paramount.
Secondary objective: Opportunity to collect trace evidence.
