AS Population Dynamics Flashcards
Birth rate
the number of offspring per 1000 population per year
Carrying capacity
The greatest population that can be supported sustainably in an area.
Death rate
the number of deaths per 1000 population per year
Density dependent factors
factors where the chances of survival are dependent on the density of the populations, eg disease, food supply
Density independent factors
factors where the density of the population has no effect on the chances of survival, eg flood, volcanic eruptions
K-selected species
Species that have a relatively low breeding capacity: they often mature at a later age and have few young.
r-selected species
Species that have a relatively high breeding capacity: they often mature at a young age and have large numbers of young.
