Q

What effect does hyperkalaemia have on cardiac function? (3)

A
  • Increases cardiac excitation
  • Increases cardiac arrhythmias
  • Can progress to complete heart block

13
Q

What are the causes of hyperkalaemia? (5)

A
  • Presampling error: (SST tube not filled before EDTA tube as EDTA kicks K out of blood)
  • Post sampling error: haemolysis sample, unseperated sample
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Drugs
  • Hypopituitarism/hypoaldosteronism

15
Q

What effect does hypokalaemia have on cardiac function? (3)

A
  • Increases gradient across cardiac cell membrane
  • Increases action potential
  • Reduces cardiac excitability
  • Arrythmias e.g AF

Q

What are the causes of hypokalaemia? (4)

A
  • GI: diarrhoea/vomiting
  • Endocrine: increased mineralcorticoid activity = Cushing’s/Conn’s
  • Diuretics (non K sparing)
  • Insulin treatment with no K supplements (as insulin transports K into cells)
