Articulations Flashcards
Synarthroses
Immovable joints- sutures
Amphiarthroses
Joints that allow some movement - pubic symphisis, spine
Diarthroses
Freely movable joints- shoulder
Fibrous joints
Bones joined by short connective tissue fibers. Most are synarthroses.
Cartilaginous joints
Bones United by cartilage rather than fibrosis connective tissue. Most are amphiarthroses
Synostosis
Joint formed when the epiphyseal plate ossifies
Sychondroses
Joints that continue to contain hyaline cartilage ate their articulations - ribs
Syntheses
Joints with fibrocartilage - pubic symphysis and vertebral discs
Synovial joint
Joints that have a true joint cavity
Consists of 2 bones whose ends articular ends are covered with hyaline cartilage
Synovial membrane
Membrane in a synovial joint that secretes watery fluid (synovial fluid)
Articular Discs or Menisci
Fibrocartilage pads that improve the fit of 2 bones to prevent dislocation
Bursae
Fluid filled sacs often located between tendons and joints to reduce fiction
Nonaxial joints
a joint that does not move around an axis, instead the bones glide past one another. ex: costovertebral joint
Uniaxial joint
Joint that allows movement on only one plane of direction. ex: elbow allows only for extension and flexion
Biaxial joints
Joints that allow from movement on 2 planes of direction. ex: wrist allows for flexion/extension and abduction/adduction
Multiaxail joints
Joints that allow for movement on multiple planes of direction. Joints with the greatest ROM ex: shoulder extension/flexion, abduction/adduction, and rotation
Synovial Plane Joint
Joint where the bones glide across one another. ex: intercarpal joint
Synovial Condyloid joint
Joints where one bone that fits into the concave surface of another bone. ex: metacarpophalangeal joints)
Synovial Saddle joint
Joints similar to condyloid joints, but allows for greater range of motion. ex: carpometacarpal joint
Synovial Hinge joint
Joints where bones fit together like hinge of a door. The convex articular surface of one bone fits into the concave articular surface of the other. ex: elbow joint
Pivot Joint
Joints where one bone rotates around another. ex: proximal radioulnar joint.
