Articulation of phonemes Flashcards
plosives
manner of articulation where pronunciation involves complete blockage of the airstream in the oral cavity followed by release of the air. There are 6 in English /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/
nasals
A manner of articulation where air flows through the nasal cavity. There are three: /m/, /n/, /ŋ/
fricatives
manner of articulation in which the airstream is constricted in the oral cavity leading to a certain degree of turbulence. /f/, /v/, /θ/, /ð/, /s/, /z/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /h/
affricates
manner of articulation which a combination of plosive and fricative. /tʃ/, /dʒ/
approximants
Manner of articulation associated in which the airstream flows freely, central approximants like /w/, /j/, /ɹ/
lateral approximants like /l/
bilabial
place of articulation involving the lips moving together, /p/, /b/
labiodental
when articulated upper teeth touch lower lip /f/,/v/
dental
when articulated tip of tongue touches upper teeth, /θ/, /ð/
alveolar
when articulated tip of tongue touches alveolar ridge in mouth (top of mouth right before the teeth) /t/, /d/, /n/, /s/, /z/, /l/, /r/
postalveolar
articulation involves tip of tongue hitting back of alveolar ridge. /ʃ/, /ʒ/
palatal
articulation involves top of tongue hitting hard palate (front of roof of mouth) /tʃ/, /dʒ/
velar
when articulated back of tongue touches soft palate (back of the roof of mouth) /k/, /g/, /ŋ/
glottal
produced by bringing vocal folds together to make s a hissy sound. independent of other articulators like tongue or lips. /h/
allophones
predictable variations in the pronunciation of phonemes for example /p/ is aspirated only at the beginning of a syllable not elsewhere
allomorphs
predictable variations in the pronunciation of a morpheme, for instance the plural -s is /s/ after an unvoiced consonant like cat/s/ or /z/ after a voiced consonant like dog/z/
