First Amendment
Separation of church/ state, freedom of religion, speech, press, dissent, and association.
Second Amendment
“Keep and bear arms,” given a militia is necesary to a state’s security
Third Amendment
Not to have to house soldiers in peacetime
Fourth Amendment
Court needs warrant based on probable cause to arrest/ search.
Fifth Amendment
Rights of accused (indictment, double jeopardy, self incrimination) and due processs, eminent domain.
Sixth Amendment
Rights of the accused: fair, public, speedy trial by jury, right to compel testimony in accused’s favor, right to lawyer
Seventh Amendment
Rights in civil suits
Eighth Amendment
Rights of accused/ convicted: no excessive bails, no excessive fines, no cruel and unusual punishment.
Ninth Amendment
Listing the rights does not limit the rights
Tenth Amendment
Powers reserved to the states or to the people
13th Amendment
Bans slavery
14th Amendment
Defining citizenship, prohibits denial of citizenship, prohibits due process of law by state, states treat citizens equally
15th Amendment
No state may deny citizen right to vote based on race, color, etc.
16th Amendment
Allows for income tax
17th Amendment
Citizens vote directly for senators
