Article 1: Pursuit of Pleasure: A Biopsychosocial Perspective on Sexual Pleasure and Gender Flashcards
The “dangers” sexual pleasure
The paper states that western religuous society consider sex to be dangerous and destructive.
This reinforces many caretakers fears that a positive approach to sexual health and sex education will entice innocent children and young adults into engaging in sex that they cant consent to.
Research shows that extensive sex education results in more condom use and less unwanted pregnancies.
Sexual pleasure gender differences
The paper says that engaging in sexual activity may be exchangeable to experiencing sexual pleasure for men but not for women.
Men orgasm 95% of the time and women 65%.
Oral sex important for orgasms in women.
Pain in sex
46% of women have experienced pain during intercourse.
10-28% of men have experienced pain.
Women usually continue with sex even if it hurts because of fear of their partner leaving them.
Sexual violence
1 in 3 women have experienced sexual violence. Half of these were under 16 years old.
Sexual desire gender differences
The idea that men have higher sexual desire depends on how sexual desire is conceptualized and measured.
If sexual desire is seen as emerging rather than preceding incetivized sexual arousal, gender differences in reported feelings of desire may be the result of differences in incentive, or sexual context, quality rather than innate differences..
Capacity for sexual pleasure
Women and men don’t seem to differ in biological or psychological capacity for sexual pleasure.
Reproduction is a by product of sexual pleasure.
The current pleasure gaps represent a severe neglect in female erotic potential.
Does pleasure breed desire
When heterosexual women expect more opportunities for sexual pleasure based on earlier experiences or when they prioritize their own sexual pleasure (at least as much as that of their male partner), they are more likely to desire sexual activity.
Coital imperative
Common view that penile vaginal sex is the most important of all forms of sex.
Only when women are fully aroused and the the outer and inner aspects of the clitoris are engorged, she is likely to experience pleasure and orgasm.
