Q

Arthropods characteristics

A

bilateral symmetry
bodies made up of similar repeated segments
these are sometimes fused to form heads/ tails etc
(paired), jointed appendages
Arthro - pod = jointed foot
modified to form antennae, mouthparts, etc.
single brached (uniramous) and double branched (biramous)
external skeleton (exoskeleton)
this is what is found in fossils
but restricts growth
can only expand and shed
makes you vulnerable
versatility, diffeerent limbs diffeerent dunctions

Q

Arthropods made out of

A

made out of chitin (polysaccharfide), sometimes calcite

chitin doesnt preserve very weell, organic material which breaks down

Appendages

A

single-branched antennae

– all others paired (biramous) - one branch a jointed walking limb, the other a gill

Q

Trilobites otherfeatures

A

can enroll → protection
Tribolite eyes vary but present! some don’t have eyes at all
Trilobite moulting
shede skeletons, this helps to trace growth patterns

Q

Trilobite ecology

A

can help undeerstand function of shape body
benthic mode of life
– flattened body shape
– dorsal armour
– dorsal pointing eyes
– ventral appendages
• diversification of body shapes and distribution
of fossils suggests adaptation to live in a variety
of habitats
