Arthropods Flashcards
Invertebrate animal that have an exoskeleton, segmented body, and paired jointed appendages. Includes insects, arachnids, & crustaceans.
Arthropod
The shedding of old feathers, skins, or shell to make room for new growth
Molting
Chemical substance produced and released into the environment by an animal, especially a mammal or an insect, affecting the behavior or physiology of others of its species.
Pheromones
Middle section of the body of an insect, between the head and the abdomen, bearing the legs and wings.
Thorax
Segments of an insect’s body behind the thorax.
Abdomen
The fused head and thorax of spiders and other chelicerate arthropods.
Cephalothorax
Rigid external covering for the body in some invertebrate animals, especially arthropods, providing both support and protection.
Exoskeleton
One of the pair of legs that bears the large chelae in decapod crustaceans.
Cheliped
Slender tubes normally found in the posterior regions of arthropod alimentary canals.
Malpighean tubes
Arthropod of the class Arachnida, such as a spider or scorpion.
Arachnid
in an insect or amphibian, the process of transformation from an immature form to an adult form in two or more distinct stages.
Metamorphosis
Large, diverse arthropod taxon which includes such familiar animals as crabs, lobsters, crayfish, shrimp, krill, woodlice, and barnacles.
Crustaceans
Insects or Insecta are hexapod invertebrates and the largest group within the arthropod phylum.
Insects
Either of a pair of long, thin sensory appendages on the heads of insects, crustaceans, and some other arthropods.
Antennae
One of the paired abdominal appendages of certain aquatic crustaceans, such as shrimp & lobsters. They function primarily for carrying the eggs in females and are usually adapted for swimming. Also called pleopod
