Arthropods Flashcards
Arthropod
An arthropod is an invertebrate animal having an exoskeleton, a segmented body, and jointed appendages. Arthropods form the phylum Arthropoda, and include the insects, arachnids, myriapods, and crustaceans.
Molting
shed old feathers, hair, or skin, or an old shell, to make way for a new growth.
Pheromones
are naturally occurring odorless substances the fertile body excretes externally, conveying an airborne signal that provides information to, and triggers responses from, the opposite sex of the same species
Thorax
the middle section of the body of an insect, between the head and the abdomen, bearing the legs and wings.
Abdomen
the posterior part of the body of an arthropod, especially the segments of an insect’s body behind the thorax.
Cephalothorax
is a tagma of various arthropods, comprising the head and the thorax fused together, as distinct from the abdomen behind.
Exoskeleton
a rigid external covering for the body in some invertebrate animals, especially arthropods, providing both support and protection.
Cheliped
also named claw, nipper or pincer, is a pincer-like organ terminating certain limbs of some arthropods.
Malpighean tubes
are slender tubes normally found in the posterior regions of arthropod alimentary canals
Arachnid
Arachnids are a class of joint-legged invertebrate animals, in the subphylum Chelicerata. All arachnids have eight legs, although the front pair of legs in some species has converted to a sensory
spider
an eight-legged predatory arachnid with an unsegmented body consisting of a fused head and thorax and a rounded abdomen. Spiders have fangs that inject poison into their prey, and most kinds spin webs in which to capture insects.
Metamorphosis
the process of transformation from an immature form to an adult form in two or more distinct stages.
Crustaceans
Crustaceans form a very large group of arthropods, usually treated as a subphylum, which includes such familiar animals as crabs, lobsters, crayfish, shrimp, krill and barnacles
Insects
arthropod phylum that have a chitinous exoskeleton, a three-part body, three pairs of jointed legs, compound eyes and one pair of antennae.
Antennae
either of a pair of long, thin sensory appendages on the heads of insects, crustaceans, and some other arthropods.
Scorpions
animal with little pinchers
Swimmerets
normally found on the first five abdominal segments and typically terminate in paired oarlike branches. They function primarily for carrying the eggs in females and are usually adapted for swimming.
Green glands
on whether they open at the base of the antennae or at the maxillae. If the tubule adjacent to the excretory pore is green,
Woodtick
A nasty bug
Grasshopper
order Orthoptera, suborder Caelifera. They are sometimes referred to as short-horned grasshoppers to distinguish them from the katydids which have much longer antennae
Butterfly
pidoptera, along with the moths. Adult butterflies have large, often brightly coloured wings, and conspicuous, fluttering flight
Housefly
Musca domestica, is a fly of the suborder Cyclorrhapha.
Mosquito
small, midge-like flies which comprise the family Culicidae. Females of most species are ectoparasites, whose tube-like mouthparts pierce the hosts’ skin to consume blood
Crab
decapod crustaceans of the infraorder Brachyura, which typically have a very short projecting “tail”, usually entirely hidden under the thorax
Lobster
large marine crustaceans. They have long bodies with muscular tails,
