Arthropod Flashcards
Arthropod
An invertebrate animal of the large phylum Arthropoda, such as an insect, spider, or crustacean.
Molting
The manner in which an animal routinely casts off a part of its body (often, but not always, an outer layer or covering).
Pheromones
A chemical substance produced and released into the environment by an animal, especially a mammal or an insect, affecting the behavior or physiology of others of its species.
Thorax
Encloses the heart and lungs.
Abdomen
The part of the body of a vertebrate containing the digestive organs; the belly.
Cephalothorax
The fused head and thorax of spiders and other chelicerate arthropods.
Exoskeleton
A rigid external covering for the body in some invertebrate animals, especially arthropods, providing both support and protection.
Cheliped
One of the pair of legs that bears the large chelae in decapod crustaceans.
Malpighean tubes
Are slender tubes normally found in the posterior regions of arthropod alimentary canals.
Arachnid
An arthropod of the class Arachnida, such as a spider or scorpion.
Metamorphosis
A change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one, by natural or supernatural means.
Crustaceans
Form a large, diverse arthropod taxon which includes such familiar animals as crabs, lobsters, crayfish, shrimp, krill, woodlice, and barnacles.
Insects
Are hexapod invertebrates and the largest group within the arthropod phylum.
Antennae
Either of a pair of long, thin sensory appendages on the heads of insects, crustaceans, and some other arthropods.
Swimmerets
A forked swimming limb of a crustacean, five pairs of which are typically attached to the abdomen.
