Arthrology of the hip Flashcards
Attachment points of the iliofemoral ligament?
AIIS and adjacent acetabular rim to intertrochanteric line
Attachment points of the pubofemoral ligament?
Iliopubic eminence and superior pubic ramus to intertrochanteric line
Attachment points of the ischiofemoral ligament?
Ischial body to the neck of the femur
Function of the iliofemoral ligament?
Limits extension, external rotation, abduction (upper fibres) and adduction (lower fibres) of the hip
Function of the pubofemoral ligament?
Limits abduction, lateral rotation, and extension of the hip
Function of the ischiofemoral ligament?
Limits extension, medial rotation, and adduction of the hip
What are the attachments of the fibrous capsule of the hip and where is the capsule thickest?
- capsule is thickest anteriorly and superiorly
- Superiorly attaches between the acetabulum and inferiorly to the transverse ligament
- Anteriorly attaches between the acetabulum and the intertrochanteric line
Posteriorly attaches between the acetabulum and the femoral neck
What are the intra-articular structures of the hip?
- Acetabular labrum: deepens the socket of the hip, cups the head of femur in the socket preventing displacement
- Ligamentum teres: connects the fovea capitis to the acetabulum notch
- Acetabular fat pad: Occupies the non-articular floor of the acetabulum and distributes synovial fluid
- Transverse ligament: Bridges the notch inferiorly, completes the socket of the hip
Capsular features of the hip joint?
Longitudinal fibres: runs in a straight line between the acetabulum and head of femur
Oblique fibres: runs in a diagonal line between the acetabulum and head of femur
Arcuate fibres: runs in a arch from one end of the acetabulum to the other
Zona orbicularis: runs in a circular arrangement around the neck of the femur. This is the deepest part of the capsule
