Arthorogy Flashcards
Diarthrosis or synovial joint
Bone connected by a hallow sleeve of connective tissue proper.
- more common
- more mobile
Synarthroses- what are its 2 subcategories? What are their functions?
Fibrous joints- solid mass. Least mobile joint. Connective tissue proper
-meniscus
Cartilage joints- bone connected by a solid mass of cartilage
Interosseous membrane.
Bone joined by sheets of dense connective tissue.
-very strong
Found in radius, ulna, tibia, and fibula
Syndesmosis
Bones joined by bands or thin layers of dense connective tissue.
Gomphosis- thin tissue that holds teeth together (in place).
Sutures
What are the 4 types?
Plates that hold the skull together( where bones come together).
Shock absorption zones
4 types: Plate sutures Squamous sutures Serrate sutures Denticulate sutures
Synchondrosis
Epiphyseal growth plate- held together with cartilage and found only in children.
~Allows bones to lengthen
~weakest part of the bone in a child
~can stunt growth if damaged.
Symphysis
What are the 2 types?
What’s their functions?
Intervertebral discs- found in the spine
Symphysis pubis- found in pubic bone
Fibro cartilage
Absorbs shock
Strongest
Synovial fluid
Lubricates and supply’s avascular articular cartilage with needed nutrients.
Synovial membranes
Involved in secreting and absorbing the synovial fluid that is essential for the smooth operation of joints.
-Has blood in it
Fiberous membrane or capsular ligament
Thickened continuation of the periosteum. Collagenous surrounding the spaces between neighboring bones.
- binds one bone to another
- connective tissue
Ligaments
- Connects bone to bone
- does not contract
- dense regular
- all over
Bursae
- small bags
- Outer Fibrous membrane
- dense irregular
- reduces friction between neighboring tissues
Retinaculum
Collagenous bands of connective tissue that form tunnels through which multi joint tendons pass as they course into the hands and feet.
-holds the tendon in place and prevents it from being displaced.
Synovial sheath
Protects the tendon from damage as it rubs against the neighboring bone and Retinaculum.
