Artery territories and stroke outcomes Flashcards
What parts of the brain are supplied by the ACA?
Motor cortex- leg
Sensory cortex- leg
Supplementary motor area- speech initiation
Prefrontal cortex- volition, motivation, planning and organisation of complex behaviour
If you had a left ACA infarct, what symptoms might you display?
Right leg- UMN weakness, sensory loss
Behavioural abnormalities
Grasp reflex
Behavioural abnormalities
What parts of the brain are supplied by the MCA?
Broca’s area- expressive speech
Wernicke’s area- receptive speech
Motor cortex- head and arms
Sensory cortex- head, neck and arms
Basal ganglia- Initiation and control of movement
Internal capsule- Motor function of CN’s- (CNIII)
Symptoms of superficial MCA infarct?
Face and arm UMN weakness contralateral side
Dysphasia (expressive and receptive)
Symptoms of lenticulostriate MCA infarct?
Pure UMN hemiparesis
Aphasia
PCA territory?
Occipital lobe- primary/secondary visual areas- sensation and interpretation of visual input
Splenium of corpus callosum- connects L & R visual centres
Thalamus- ascending/descending relay centre
Internal capsule- corticospinal tracts
Right PCA infarct symptoms?
Left homonymous hemianopia
Left hemisensory loss
Left hemiparesis
