Arterial Supply of Brain Flashcards
1
Q
State the main arteriole supply of the anterior circulation
A
Internal carotid artery
2
Q
State the structures supplied by the middle cerebral artery
A
- Middle cerebral artery supplies majority of lateral cerebral area
- Lateral aspect of frontal and parietal lobe - lateral homunculus (face and upper limb)
- Superior aspect of temporal lobe - inferior radiations of visual field
- Lenticulostriate arteries which are branches of MCA are very susceptible to emboli as small diameter
- Supply major motor pathways (internal capsule)
3
Q
State the structures supplied by the anterior cerebral artery
A
- Anterior cerebral artery supplies medial portion of frontal and parietal lobe
- Medial homunculus (upper and lower limb)
4
Q
Describe the role of the communicating arteries
A
- Anterior communicating artery connects 2 anterior cerebral artery
- Posterior communicating artery connects anterior and posterior circulation
- Collateral circulation allows partial solution to blockages but is not sustainable over time
5
Q
State the main arteriole input to the posterior circulation
A
Vertebral arteries
6
Q
State the structures of the posterior circulation
A
- Vertebral artery converges to form basilar artery
- Basilar artery bifurcates into posterior cerebral artery
- Anterior spinal artery forms from 2 branches of vertebral artery
- Pontine arteries branch off of basilar artery and supply pons
- Cerebellar arteries
7
Q
State the structures supplied by the posterior cerebral artery
A
Posterior cerebral artery supplies occipital lobe and posterior temporal lobe - affects visual system
8
Q
State the cerebellar arteries
A
- Superior cerebellar artery supplies superior cerebellum
- Anterior inferior cerebellar artery supplies anterior portion of inferior cerebellum
- Posterior inferior cerebellar artery supplies posterior portion of inferior cerebellum
- (Cerebellum arteries also supply brainstem alongside posterior cerebral artery)
