Arterial Blood Gases Flashcards
Metabolic and Respiratory Acidosis/Alkalosis: values, causes, symptoms
Saturation of peripheral Oxygen: Norm values
when is supplemental O2 indicated?
SpO2 = 95-100% (of arterial hemoglobin is saturated with O2)
<88%
Partial pressure of Oxygen in arterial blood: Norm
when is supplemental O2 indicated?
PaO2 = 80-100 mmHg
<55 mmHg
Partial pressure of CO2 in arterial blood: Norm
What kind of relationship with pH?
PaCO2 = 35-45 mmHg
INVERSE
How does COPD effect PaO2 and PaCO2?
PaO2 will be lower; PaCO2 will be higher
Normal range for blood pH
Norm value of Bicarb and relationship w/ pH?
norm pH = 7.35-7.45
norm Bicarbonate ion = 22-28
DIRECT
Respiratory Acidosis: symptoms and causes
confusion, headache, dyspnea. COPD, myasthenia
Respiratory Alkalosis: symptoms and causes
dizziness, syncope,parastesia. hyperventilation, sepsis, fever, liver disease.
Metabolic Acidosis: symptoms and causes
Nausea, lethargy. Bicarbonate deficient, renal failure, diabetes, alcohol, starvation, loss of alkaline body fluids.
Metabolic Alkalosis: symptoms and causes
weakness. Vomiting, hypokalemia, diuretics, fluid loss.
