Arterial Blood Gas Analysis Flashcards
Raised SBC indicates
Metabolic alkalosis
Lowered Standard Bicarbonate (SBC) indicates
metabolic acidosis
Positive base value indicates
either base has been added or acid removed
Negative value base excess indicates
base has been removed or acid added
Measurement of BE allows analysis
of pure metabolic component of acid base balance
What is compensation?
It is the bodies response to acid-base disorder aim being to return H to normal. Acid base disturbances can be compensated or decompensated
A decompensated state reflects
an acute change affected only one system (kidney or lung). Unaffected system will be in normal limits
3 things a final blood gas analysis should include
- Oxygenation status
- Primary disorder
- Degree of compensation
Usefulness of Arterial blood gas analysis
Measure of respiratory status
Measure of acid-base balance/disorder
Measure of response to treatment
Monitors ventilation and metabolic processes
What secondary compensation can occur in metabolic acidosis
Hyperventilation
Secondary compensation in metabolic alkalosis is?
Hypoventilation
