What is a pattern?
arrangement of alternated or repeated elements or motifs.
What is a contrast?
The juxtaposition of different elements of design in order to highlight their differences, create visual interests, or a focal point.
What is emphasis?
Giving special attention to one part of a work of art. Done through placement, contrast, color, size, repetition, etc. Relates to focal point.
What is balance
When the elements are designed symmetrically OR asymmetrically to create the impression of equality.
What is proportion/scale?
The relationship between objects with respect to size, number, etc, including the relationship between parts of a whole.
What is unity?
The arrangement of elements to give the viewer the feeling that all the parts of the piece form a coherent whole.
What is rhythm/movement?
The use of recurring elements to direct the movement of the eye. There are five types of rhythms: random, regular, alternating, progressive, and flowing. Leads the eye to the focal area.
What is a line?
The path of a moving point.
What is a shape?
A flat, enclosed area.
What is a form?
A three dimensional enclosed volume, showing length, width, and depth.
What is space?
The area in which an artwork is organized, including the space between, around, outside, and within objects.
How can you draw space in a flat surface?
overlapping, size, placement, detail, value/color, and perspective
What is illusionistic space?
Attempts to represent the 3D world as the human eye sees it. One point perspective is a method of creating the illusions of 3 dimensions of a 2D surface
What is positive space?
the subject or focus of an image
What is negative space?
the area around or between subjects
