What are the six formal elements of art?
Not formal principles
Line, Shape, Form,
Colour, Space, Texture
Define Line
“A point moving in space.” Can be 2D or 3D. All directions, forms, real, and implied
Define Shape
“A closed, two dimensional form.” Can be geometric or organic, positive or negative
Define Form
“A shape in three dimensions.” Geometric, organic. Can be viewed from multiple angles
Define Colour
“How we perceive light reflecting off of objects.” Has three characteristics
What are the three characteristics of colour?
Hue, Intensity, Value
Define Hue
A specific, pure colour by its usual name
Define Value
Darkness: light to dark, white to black
Define intensity
The brightness and dullness
Define Space
“The relationship between parts of an artwork.” Can suggest three dimensions and depth
Define Texture
“The surface quality of an artwork”
