Art Semester Exam Flashcards
A continuous mark made by a moving point
Line
What the eye sees when light bounces off an object
Color
The lightness or darkness of a color
Value
An element of art that encloses space
Shape
Precise shapes that can be described using mathematical formulas
Geometric
Found in nature (leaf, raindrop)
Organic
The area between, around, above, below, or within things
Space
The surface quality or “feel” of an object
Texture
A type of texture that you can actually touch
Actual - Tactile (texture)
The illusion of texture
Implied/Simulated - visual
The guidelines that govern the way elements go together
Principles of Art
The making of an element or an object in a work of art stand out
Emphasis
The way art elements are arranged to create a feeling of stability
Balance
A type of balance in which objects or figures are repeated in a mirror-like fashion on each side of a central axis
Symmetrical/Formal
A type of balance in which a variety of different objects that have approximately equal visual weight are placed on either side of a central axis
Asymmetrical/Informal
A type of balance in which objects or figures are spaced evenly around a central point
Radial
The use of motifs, color, shape, or line to decorate surface space
Pattern
The total visual effect achieved by blending the elements and principles of art
Unity
The path a viewer’s eye follows throughout a work of art
Movement
The repeating of an element to make a work seem active
Rhythm
The use of elements of art to create variety, so that the work of art is not boring or monotonous
Contrast
Primary Colors:
Colors that make all other colors: red, yellow, blue
Secondary Colors:
Colors made by mixing two primary colors in equal amounts: green, orange, violet
Intermediate Colors:
Colors made by mixing neighboring primary and secondary colors on the color wheel
(ex: mixing red and orange to get red-orange)
Monochromatic
One color plus white and black
(ex: blue+white+black)
Complementary
Colors that are opposite on the color wheel
Analogous Colors
Next to each other on the color wheel
(ex: Yellow orange, orange, red orange)
Triadic Color Scheme
Three colors spaced equally apart on the color wheel
(ex: orange, green, violet)
Tint
Adding white to a color
Intensity
The strength, brightness, or purity of a color
Warm Colors:
Colors in which red, orange, and yellow predominate
Cool Colors:
Colors in which green, blue, and purple predominate
Shade
Adding black to a color
Properties of Color
Hue, Value, and Intensity
How do you neutralize a color?
Add its complement (opposite color on color wheel)
Drawing technique using sets of crisscrossing, parallel, and overlapping lines to create areas of different degrees of darkness
Cross-hatching
A line drawn to show the outer edge of an object
Contour Line
Area of a picture that appears furthest from the viewer
Background
The middle area of a picture, between the foreground and the background
Middleground
The area in a picture that seems closest to the viewer
Foreground
Placing one object in front of the other, partially concealing the object behind. This technique is used to suggest depth
Overlapping
A line that divides the sky from the ground or a body of water
Horizon Line
The point on the horizon line where receding parallel lines meet in a perspective drawing
Vanishing Point
The area containing the principal subject matter in a composition
Positive Space
rt The space in a composition not occupied by the subject matter, but still used as part of the overall design
Negative Space
