-a mixed media collage showing a bruised, beaten and naked Steve Biko in his interrogation chamber
-The minister of police mocked and said ‘dit laat hom koud’
-POLITICAL BACKGROUND: 1973- Steve Biko banned by government, detained and interrogated under Apartheid laws
-ARTWORK BACKGROUND: 1977 August - Biko was arrested for the last time
Taken to hospital naked and ‘died from natural causes’ -> actually starvation and police brutality
-ARTWORK: collage piece to show that Biko was a broken man at the end of his life
Large head = intelligence + BCM ideas
Naked = vulnerable
Framed portrait of police in back = responsible for torture/death
Dull colours= crude/ raw
Empty chairs = people who took passive stance against apartheid
SB= martyr and symbol of black resistance to oppressive apartheid regime

A

-sculpture installation, 160 cm, showing young black boys with numbers and confined to crates
-Created in 1988
-POLITICAL BACKGROUND: response to Uitenhage Massacre 1985 -> on the anniversary of Sharpeville Massacre (21 March 1960) -> gathered for funerals of victims of Sharpeville (were banned by government) -7 police came and people tried to leave and run away ›shot
in the back while running away
-ARTWORK: small crowd of chaos, anguished heures * faces - urgent look, need to escape
Number = depersonalised
Front view boys are present. Side view: 2D, only can see edge -> they are just a front page

-IRONY: title says they running but they have no legs -> immobilized in pine boxes (coffin replace the lower half of their body)
-MATERIALS: polystyrene covered with brown paper + paint > shape to suggest movemen

Forced removals

-oil painting of a district destruction and image of scrap metals
-POLITICAL BACKGROUND: Destruction of District six in cape town. The removals were usually
sudden and violent when police entered townships.
-ARTWORK: shows the apartheid government using bulldozers to move a township. The people tried to find shelter in shacks and try have a home but they were not allowed
‘made in England’ = chaos and disconnect caused by colonial values
-MATERIAL: drawn on an old piece pf board + throw away ‘rubbish’ materials are used Materials used to express the context of the people’s homes: ‘make-shift’, dangerous
