Five basic skills of perception
Perception of edges Perception of spaces Perception of relationships Perception of lights and shadows Perception of the whole, or gestalt
unity
visual linking of elements in a work, relating elements to message helps create unity
aggressive: benefits from dominant oblique direction, rough texture, sharp angles
passive: benefits from horizontal lines, soft texture, reduced tonal contrast
harmony
Brings together with similar units;
Visually satisfying effect of combining similar, related elements (analogous colors, similar shapes)
If you use wavy lines and organic shapes stay with those rather than putting in one geometric shape
variety
the use of different or contrasting elements to add interest
Balance
is a feeling of visual quality in shape, form, value, etc balance, symmetric or assymetric
A large shape close to the center can be balanced by a small shape close to the edge, large light tone by small dark tone
