Define balance
The way art elements are arranged in an artwork.
Define contrast
The use of strong differences between art elements to draw attention to parts of an artwork.
Define repetition
The use of an art element or object multiple times in an artwork. Can be a pattern or just repetition.
Define space
Space is the area around objects. It is also called negative or positive space.
Define movement
The arrangement of art elements to suggest movement, even in a still artwork.
Define scale
The size of a whole object compared to another whole object.
Define proportion
Size of a part of an object compared to the size of the whole object.
Define rhythm
The use of art elements to create flow in an artwork.
Define emphasis
Where one art element overpowers others in an artwork. Makes that part stand out.

When the art elements work together in an artwork.

The use of several different art elements to hold the viewers attention and improve the rhythm of the piece.
