Cassandre

A

The use of dark black, grey and white on the train makes it stand out more against the light blue and white background. These graduated grey tones convey a powerful and modern train that would be reliable, which in turn helps with its function of advertising the train journey.
The red on the title is very eye-catching as it’s the only warm coloured thing on the poster. It makes the poster not feel too cold and uninviting. It draws the viewer’s eye in and suggests along with the blue and white, a connection with France, the company’s place of origin.

Lettering
Cassandre

A

The writing is sans serif and simple. The name of the train is written in big letters in the centre of the top of the poster. This works well to advertise the train company being advertised. There are other sizes of lettering giving further information around the edge, using different sizes makes it more interesting visually.

visual impact
Cassandre

A

The imagery of the train from a very low viewpoint has a visual impact. This has been done to make the train look bigger and like it’s going really fast. This has been done to impress the target market and to catch the attention of passersby.
The well blended colour on the train makes it look very smooth. This helps it look clean, sleak, brand new. It doesn’t look like one of the old wooden brown trains, it looks more modern. It catches the eye of rich people that may want to travel in a train like that, therefore creating visual impact.

Style
Cassandre

A

This poster has been done in an Art Deco style. You can see this in the gradient from white to blue in the sky, the sharp precise lines on the train and the geometric shapes that the train has been composed of. The designer was inspired by Picasso who created the style of Cubism. It was known as the style of the machine age.

materials, techniques or technologies
Cassandre

A

The poster has been printed using the lithography techniques, this allowed the design to use different colours and pictures, most importantly it allowed for many copies to be printed at once, which meant it could be more effective at advertising over a larger area.
The designer used stencils and airbrushing to achieve the crisp straight lines and graduated colours. This can be seen on the train and in the background, This meant the poster was eye-catching as this technique was new in the 1930’s.

I quite like this poster. I think it makes the train look very impressive. I also really like the gradient from white to dark blue as it looks very calming yet intimidating because of the size of the train.

The line on the womans dress make the dress look frilly and voluminous. The curved floor boards make it look like the woman is moving and dancing along the dance floor.
Their is alot of texture on on the arm and cello (on the borders of the poster) This helps the dancing woman stand out as she is quite smooth.

The dancing woman is the vocal point of this poster. This has been done by framing her with the musical instrument and portraying her in colour. She is also the largest thing in the poster.
