What was Picasso’s Guernica about?

A

About the bombing of Guernica , a Basque Country village in northern Spain , by German and Italian warplanes at the request of the Spanish Nationalists .

Upon completion, Guernica was displayed around the world in a brief tour, becoming famous and widely acclaimed, and believed to have helped bring worldwide attention to the Spanish Civil War .

What 2 Picasso watercolours were stolen & sold to Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev?

Bought from from art merchant Yves Bouvier.

Bought by Dmitry Rybolovlev for €27m (£20m) in 2013.

Mr Rybolovlev (who owns Monaco football club), handed over the two paintings to French authorities as they investigating whether they were stolen.

Feud between art-dealer and Picasso’s step-daughter, Catherine Hutin-Blay.

Her mother posed for the paintings,

Catherine Hutin-Blay says they were stolen from her private collection two years ago.

Bouvier’s Singapore bank accounts were frozen for a while, but this was overturned by a judge.

What was the name of Picasso’s Croatian mistress.

A

Dora - Croatian photographer and surrealist.

Legend has it they met whilst she was showing a challenge of stabbing a knife along her hand (between her fingers). She stabbed her hand & Picasso reportedly offered to buy the bloodied glove.

His other mistress - Marie-Therese had just given bed to his child.

A replica of Picasso’s Guernica was covered up where & when?

A

At the United Nations in New York.

Colin Powell had just argued for the invasion of Iraq at the UN.

The press conference was due to be held afterwards, but a large reproduction of Guernica was on the wall.

It was covered up by a blue drape for the interview.

What types of animals are drawn in the Chauvet Cave?

A

at least 13 different species.
Hundreds of animal paintings
Not just depicting herbivores that dominate cave art (horses, cattle, mammoths etc) it also includes predatory animals: cave lions, panthers, bears, cave hyenas & rhinoceroses (rhino is unconfirmed).

These are rarely or never found in other ice age paintings.
