what are the elements of art?
colour, line, shape, form, tone, texture, light, time and sound
what is colour?

colour is a visual sensation produced by light.
Bold, subdued, vibrant, bright, subtle, warm, cool, loud. Primary, Secondary, tertiary, contrasting,
what is line?

line may be used to create emphasis, used to create a border to define areas of composition and create structure and stability, used to create variation in tone and texture.
thick, thin, bold, horizontal, vertical, jagged, flowing, curved and diagonal
what is shape?

a two-dimensional enclosure, can be made by other design elements such as like colour, tone, texture and pattern.
organic, geometric, soft and harsh/scary
what is form?

form refers to objects that are three dimensional in nature. A form has HEIGHT, WIDTH and DEPTH.
dominant, subtle, tactile, solid, organic, geometric and irregular
what is tone?
tone is the ‘value’ of a colour. we speak about the tone when we discuss ‘light’ and ‘dark’.
what is texture?
describing words?
texture is a quality experienced through touch. real textures are those hat we can touch and feel.
smooth, glossy, hard, rough, corrugated
what is light?
may include natural or artificial sources that have been manipulated by artists to evoke specific aesthetic qualities.
what is time?
may be used by an artist to express time frames
what is sound?
artworks that engage the hearing sensory of the viewer
what are the art principles?
balance, contrast, scale, repetition and pattern, proportion, movement, emphasis, rhythm, unity, variety and space
what is balance?
describing words?
balance is the even (though not necessarily equal)distribution of the art elements and can create harmony within a composition.
symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial, dynamic, stable, formal and traditional
what is contrast?

contrast is where two or more elements that have opposite qualities are placed together
black vs white, fine lines vs solid shapes, thick and thin lines, organic and geometric shapes, strong vs weak , right vs dull, big vs small, light vs dark and feminine vs masculine
what is scale?
scale can?
scale is the size you may choose to draw or place an object in relation to he ground it is placed upon.
- creates contrast
- adds emphasis and draws attention
- creates structure and order
- creates tension through the exaggerated and unexpected size of an object
what is repetition and pattern?
repetition can be?
repetition refers to reusing the sam for similar elements throughout a design. This could be similar shapes, lines or colours that are used more than once.
