Art Design 1 Flashcards
Different forms of art such as
Drawing
Sculpture
Photography
Process
The completed work
Product
The human capacity to make things of beauty and things that stir us
Ability
Three truths about art
No definition
doesn’t have to be beautiful
Can be created for any number of reasons
Philosophies have argues that
Art serves no function
9 steps to creating better composition
- Create more than one option
- Pick a interesting/appropriate subject
- Size Matters!
- Think about Placement
- Create a area of interests
- Balance positive and negative space
- Add Dramatic values
- Simplify distracting elements
- Choose color and intensity deliberately
Attitude of rest
Vertical line
Attitude of action
Diagonal lines
A two dimensional form which takes up an area
Shape
The illusion of weight or density, also refers to the physical bulk of a solid body of material
Mass
Is the quality of height
Volume
Can be described as the area occupied by or surrounding an artwork
Space
A non-linear means of producing spatial depth, created by a change in color
Atmospheric Perspective
Can be described as a non-spatial continuum in which events occur in succession
Time
The ways artists use abstracting elements or technology to create the illusion of movement
Implied Motion
When artists create a situation for three-dimensional objects to move through space
Actual Motion
The gradation of light and dark across a surface
Chiaroscuro
The characteristic of a color that causes it to be classified as red, green and blue
Hue
Is the lightness or darkness of a color
Value
Refers to the purity of a hue
Intensity
Red
Yellow
Blue
Primary Hues
Orange
Green
Violet
Secondary Hues
Red-orange Yellow-orange Yellow-green Blue-violet Red-violet
Intermediate Hues
Colors cannot be produced by mixing other colors
Primary Hues
Place between two primary hues on the color wheel
Secondary Hues
Mixing a secondary hue with a primary hue located between the primary and secondary hues on the color wheel
Intermediate Hues
Color groupings that provide distinct color harmonies
Color Schemes
Mono=
One
Chromatic=
Color
A color scheme based on a single hue with all it’s variations in value
Monochromatic color scheme
Base on colors adjacent to one another on the color wheel
Analogous Color Scheme
two hues directly opposite to each other on the color wheel
Complementary color scheme
Tactile qualities if a surface that you can experience through the sense of touch, or the visual representative of those qualities
Texture
We can feel through the experience of touch
Actual Texture
Creating the illusion of realism
Illusion of actual texture created on a two dimensional surface
Simulated Texture
The act or organizing of the visual elements to effect a desired aesthetic on a work of art
Composition
Oneness or wholeness
Unity
Ways to achieve unity
Color harmony
Continuity
Grid
Exaggerating differences rather than similarities
Emphasize variety
Artwork that is unified by color shape or composition
Visual Unity
Artwork that has a common theme or concept throughout it
Conceptual Unity
The distribution of weight in art
Balance
Means that the piece of art is literally balanced
Actual Balance
Refers to the distribution of the apparent or visual weight of the elements in works that are basically 2D
Pictorial Balance
Refers to a similarity of form or arrangement on either side of a dividing line or plane
Symmetry
The whole of the work has a symmetrical feeling
Symmetrical Balance
Right and left side of the composition are more then slight yet their remains an overall sense of balance
Asymmetrical Balance
Everything in composition to either side of an actual or imaginary line is the same (circle)
Bilateral symmetry
Left and right side of the composition seem to be about equal
Horizontal Balance
Elements at the top and bottom of the composition are in balance
Vertical Balance
The elements on either side of a diagonal line dividing the composition are visually equal
Diagonal Balance
Design elements radiate from the center point
Radial balance
Orderly progressions
Repetition/Rhythm
Refers to size
Scale
Indicating importance
Bigger=more import
Hierarchical Scaling
How to create Emphasis
Isolation
Placement
Contrast
A repeated element
Any artistic design serving as a model for imitation
Pattern
Design unit that is repeated often enough to make it a dominant feature
Motif
