what is an art criticism?
art criticism, the analysis and evaluation of works of art. More subtly, art criticism is often tied to theory; it is interpretive, involving the effort to understand a particular work of art from a theoretical
perspective and to establish its significance in the history of art.
Basically, art criticism is the form of ANALYZING and EVALUATING works of art.
FOUR BASIC STEPS OF ART
CRITICISM
Look at the obvious (basic semiotics)
analyze the artwork (iconic plane)
decide an interpretation (contextual plane)
make a judgement call (evaluative plane)

name of the piece
medium of the artist
line shape
ANALYZE THE ARTWORK

Describe the artwork in terms of subject matter, color, and style.
Check the palette.
Check the style, this refer to the art movement or period.
Decide interpretation
what does it all mean?
Can be straightforward
Hidden meaning based on the semiotics
Make a judgement call (evaluative plane)
is the art successful?
does it convey the artist’s message?
does the art communicate a message
