Art Cinema I Flashcards
What is Art Cinema?
Art Cinema is a distinct mode of film practice, with its own set of formal conventions
How did Art Cinema come about?
Post-WWII European film industries responded to Hollywood’s domination by producing art cinema for product differentiation (distinguishing a good or service in the marketplace) on the world market
What are the three formal conventions of art cinema
Realism, Authorship, Ambiguity
What does objective realism consist of?
Handheld camera, location shooting, natural light, direct sound, improvised acting, long takes
What does subjective realism consist of?
characters lack clearly defined goals, and loose causality meaning episodic plots
What does auteur mean?
A film director with a distinctive and often consistent style
What is meant by “Ambiguity” in art cinema?
Lack of narrative closure. Ambiguous endings show that in art cinema, the telling of the story is more important than the story itself
What is the French Nouvelle Vague (New Wave)?
an era of film that rejected conventions of CHC and France’s Tradition of Quality; claimed that a film is an expression of its director (auteur)
What time did the French New Wave take place?
Post-WWII, approx. 1958-1964
Who were the key figures of the French New Wave?
Jean-Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut, Jacques Rivette, Claude Chabrol, and Agnes Varda (director of Cleo de 5 a 7)
