What is a fresco painting
Painting with pigment (colour) mixed with water onto a wet surface of lime mortar. As the wet mortar dries, it absorbs the pigment and it becomes fused with the mortar (which is what the wall is made of). This is a very long lasting painting method
Subject
What is the subject matter of the artwork? What is the scene showing us, who is in it, what are they doing?
Composition
Refers to the organisation and arrangements of combinations of objects within the painting - how the figures and objects are arranged in the painting
Focal point
The primary area or interest of focus in a painting
Overlapping
The overlapping or layering of objects/figures. Used to create depth
Negative space
The area in a painting not occupied by objects/figures
Line
The linear direction of a painting - the lines used to guide a viewers eyes through a painting
Linear perspective
Where a viewpoint recedes to a single vanishing point in the background
Atmospheric perspective
Objects in the background are made to look further away by using colour to make them appear hazier/indistinct
Depth
Techniques used in a painting to make it seem 2 or 3 dimensional
Highlighting
Use of lighter/contouring to highlight objects/figures and create depth

Foreshortening
A technique used to create depth by making an object seem shorter than it really is, and making it recede into the background
