It requires an understanding of the content by separating the parts of the subject matter.
Art analysis
The various elements that constitute the
analysis:
- The Subject matter
- How the qualities of the artwork contribute to its appearance, image or function
- The materials / mediums and the method used
- Description on the dominant elements, features, and techniques used
- Your reaction to the artwork
It’s what you see that is depicted in the artwork.
It may be a human form where the figures are engaged in an activity, or a combination of texture and color. It may also be a figure made from found objects put together or assembled into a coherent whole.
Subject matter
These are what connect subject to their social milieu, and there are many ways of determining this in an artwork.
Theme
It’s employed by the viewer after describing and analyzing an artwork.
Here, focus is on the expressive qualities, the meaning, theme, mood or idea communicated by the artist.
Art interpretation
The various elements that constitute the interpretation:
- Overall meaning of the artwork
- Interpretive Statement: “Can I express what I think the artwork is about in one sentence?”
- Evidences of the artwork that supports your interpretation
- What the artwork is intending to communicate
- The statement/s that the artist is putting forward through the artwork
- Objects that symbolize a meaning
