Art Flashcards
Thesis
It is through art that we can achieve our dreams of immortality
Idea 1 + analysis poem
The urn in Ode on a Grecian Urn represents liberation from the bounds of time and consequently death. The metaphor,” When old age shall this generation waste, thou shalt remain,’ serves to emphasise to the reader that during changes and chances in human affair art is immortal.
Idea 2 + analysis
Keats apprehensive tone in Fears accentuate his anxieties. This is seen through,’Before my pen has gleaned my teeming brain.’ The pen is personified to represent the creative ideas that he has and will have and his fear of losing his ‘harvest’ depicted by the pastoral imagery. The composer wants to escape death by going to the creative world this is revealed in ode to a nightingale where Keats juxtaposes the immortal bird to the fast fading violets
Campions pov
She utilises visual intertextuality aligning with Keats notion that art transcends time. This is evidenced when Fanny makes an embroidered pillow slip this symbolically capturing and freezing a tree in bloom
Campions other pov not recognised by Keats
Campion demonstrates that art is not only a form of immortality but a form of self expression. She mirrors Keats Romantic identity by constantly foregrounding sewing and equating to poetry as high art.
Evidence of poetry being high art
Through closeups of Fanny’s hands, body language and facial expressions sewing highlights Fannys individuality whilst simultaneously alluding to Fanny’s restricted position. As a result of negative capability, Jane Campion used Keats narrative voice,’a poem needs understanding through the senses,’ to illustrate to the audience the subjectivity of art and that anyone can enjoy it.
Conclusion on art
Both Keats and Fanny use art as form of escapism and self-expression. Borh composers reiterate that art transcends time and reality opposed to human nature
