RFC 1027
Proxy ARP - allows for multiple IP’s on one interface, used for dial up to respond for a slwo or intermittantly responding host, It is enabled by default in Cisco IOS.
ip local-proxy-arp
When this command is enabled, the router can respond to ARP requests on behalf of hosts on the local network, even if they belong to different subnets. This allows devices to communicate directly without needing to configure additional routes. It’s often used in situations like shared networks or for simplifying network configurations. (in a test they could turn off proxy arp on an interface to break traffic)
HSRP vs VRRP
In summary, HSRP is Cisco-specific while VRRP is a standardized protocol with slightly faster failover by default.
