What is a firearm?
Anything from which a projectile can be discharged by explosive force.
What is a air gun?
Anything from which a projectile can be discharged by compressed as or air.
What is an imitation firearm?
Anything that looks like a firearm wether or not it is capable of discharging a projectile.
What is a pistol?
Firearm designed or adapted to be fired with one hand and includes any firearm less than 762mm long.
What is a restricted weapon?
Any weapon declared restricted by the Governor General.
What is an explosive?
Any substance capable of exploding or producing a pyrotechnic effect.
What are the important ages to know for firearms?
0-16years: Can not have a firearms licence or own a firearm or air gun but can use one in the immediate supervision a licence holder.
16years - 18years: Requires a licence for a firearm and air gun.
18years: Requires a licence for a firearm but not an air gun.
What are the licence legal requirements?
Produce on demand within 7days
Report it if a firearm is lost or stolen
Injury or death involving the firearm must be reported
Chance of address must be notified within 30days
Legible and undamaged
Section 40 Firearms Act 1983
An demand details if in possession of a firearm, pistol, air gun or restricted weapon.
Section 18 Search and Surveillance Act 2012
Can search and seize a firearm in a place, vehicle, or other thing or on a person if:
- Reasonable grounds to suspect mental or physical condition is not sufficient to have proper control
- Grounds to make application for a Protection Order
- Protection order or Police Safety Order is in place
