Definition of a firearm
Anything from which any shot, bullet, missile, or other projectile can be discharged by force of explosion
Prohibited firearm
Semi-automatic (except a pistol) that :
- holds bullets higher than .22 caliber and magazine that holds less more than 10 bullets
- Semi-automatic shotgun with non detachable mag that holds more than 5 bullets.
A pump action shotgun with detachable mag
A pump action shotgun with non detachable mag that holds more than 5 bullets
Any other firearm declared prohibited under Section 74A
Definition of airgun
Any weapon from which by the use of gas or compressed air, any shot, bullet, missile or other projectile can be discharged
Definition of imitation firearm
Anything that has the appearance of a firearm
Definition of pistol
Any firearm that is designed or adapted to be held with one hand and is less than 762mm in length.
Examples of restricted weapons
Molotov cocktails, grenades, rocket launchers
Examples of explosives
Dynamite, TNT, Marine distress flares
Licence categories
A- Conventional firearms
B- Pistols
C- Collections, restricted weapons and use of weapons in theatrical performances
D- Dealer
Licences: 0-15 years
Cannot own a firearm or airgun but can use one under the immediate supervision of a licence holder.
Licences: 16-18 years
Requires a licence for both firearms and airguns. Needs parental consent
Licences: Over 18
Requires a licence for firearms not can lawfully own an airgun
Duties of a licence holder
- Keep it legible and undamaged
- Produce it to Police on demand
- If they don’t have it on them, produce to Police station within 7 days of demand
- Notify change of address within 30 days
- Report to Police in writing any loss, destruction, or theft of any firearm
- Report death or injury ASAP
- Renew licence every 10 years. (5 years if new licence)
