Armamentarium Flashcards
What are the 5 types of syringes used in dentistry?
1-Breech-loading, metallic, aspirating, cartridge type
2-Breech-loading, metallic, self-aspirating, cartridge type
3-Pressure-type
4-Needleless-type
5-C-CLAD-Type
Which syringe type works like a caulk gun and allows for increased pressure during injection?
Pressure syringes
*Useful for PDL/intraligamentary injections
Which syringe type injects liquid into target tissue at high pressure?
Needleless injector
What are the 3 common needle lengths?
1-Ultra-short (10-12 mm)
2-Short (20-25 mm)
3-Long (30-25 mm)
What are the 3 most commonly used needle gauges in dentistry?
1-30-gauge short
2-27-gauge long
3-25 gauge (long or short)
*Bigger number means smaller diameter. “Larger or smaller” refers to lumen diameter
What type of needle should be used when needle deflection is a concern?
Larger gauge
*(can use the Bi-ritational insertion technique (BRIT) to minimize as well)
How long should topical anesthetic be placed on tissues?
Apprx. 60 Sec (2-3 minutes can lead to soft tissue irritation
How much does a typical dental carpule hold?
1.7-1.8 mL
Passing the syringe from one side of the patient to the other should be done above or below what?
The line of sight
What are basic injection technique points to keep in mind?
1-Keep tissue taught
2-Inject a few drops follow by aspiration (retract slightly and try again if pink tinge appears)
3-Inject slower if patient seems to be in pain
What is the most common scenario in which a needle would break?
Using a pre-bent, short, 30 gauge needle inserted to the hub in the soft tissue for an IA
What local anesthesia complication is characterized by days-months of numbness?
Prolonged anesthesia or paresthesia. Mechanical trauma to the nerve
What complication may occur when the infraorbital nerve block is given or if the anesthetic is deposited into the parotid gland during an IA?
Facial nerve paralysis
A prolonged tetanic spasm of the jaw muscles, thus restricting normal opening is called what?
Trismus
*may be caused by trauma to muscles or blood vessels in the infra temporal fossa
What may result from a blood vessel being nicked during LA administration?
Hematoma
